Ohio St. will open up its defense of last season’s National Championship without four of its players including All-American defensive end Joey Bosa. Others suspended for the season opener at Virginia Tech on Sept. 7 include hybrid backs Jalin Marshall and Dontre Willson and receiver Corey Smith. All four players were said to commit unspecified violations of athletic department policy. 
Let’s not forget the Virginia Tech Hokies came into the horseshoe and defeated the Buckeyes 35-21 in front of 107,000 fans and a primetime nationally-televised audience. It was the only loss for Ohio St., but many believed it was enough for the College Football Playoff Committee not to choose Ohio St. to participate in the inaugural college football playoffs.
It is nice to see Coach Urban Meyer suspend these players. He showed that there are consequences for breaking team rules.
Meyer also showed that the rules apply to ALL players including Bosa who is entering his junior season and is projected as a top three pick, if not the top selection, in the 2016 draft. He was named a consensus All-American his sophomore season after recording 13.5 sacks which was just short of Vernon Gholston’s school record of 14. In addition, Bosa was named the Big Ten’s defensive player of the year. Clearly, Bosa is a huge loss for Ohio St. on defense as they may struggle getting to the quarterback.
I am interested to see what athletic department policies these players violated. Hopefully, Meyer will speak on this issue at the Big Ten Media Day.
